European Football: PSG, Barcelona win as Juventus, Bayern are held

(PHOTOS/Courtesy)PSG made it three wins on the trot thanks to a 1-0 victory over Strasbourg on Saturday afternoon.On his return to the Parisian side, mercurial superstar Neymar Jr scored a late stunning bicycle kick to win all three points for Tomas Tuchel’s side who are still without both Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe.The win sees PSG consolidate their lead at the top of the standings and now have 12 points from 5 games. For Strasbourg, they are yet to a game this season and are now occupying the final relegation spot with just three points from a possible 15.In the biggest clash of the weekend, Marseille came from two goals down to defeat Monaco 4-3 at the Stade Luis II on Sunday night.An early double by Wassim Ben Yedder gave Monaco the lead but by the 66th minute, it was 4-2 to the visitors thanks to goals by Dario Benedetto *2, Valere Germain and Dimitri Payet. Kaita Balde came off the bench to pull one back for Leandro Jardim’s side but they could not force a draw despite late pressure.Monaco are still second from bottom with two points while Marseille are now 4th with 10 points from 5 games.This past weekend also saw Lille, Montpellier, Bordeaux and Nantes register victories in their respective fixtures.Lille beat Angers 2-1, Montpellier defeated Nice 2-1, Bordeaux were 2-0 winners at home to Metz while Nantes ran out 1-0 victors against Reims.The rest of the fixtures all ended in draws.In Spain, Barcelona returned to winning ways with a 5-2 victory over Valencia at the Estadio Camp Nou on Saturday night. Barcelona registered their second win of the season on Saturday night.Two goals inside 7 minutes by Anssumane Fati and Frankie de Jong gave Barca a 2-0 lead but Kevin Gameiro replied on 27 minutes to ensure the scores a 2-1 by halftime. Gerald Pique and a Luis Suarez brace made it 5-1 to the hosts before  Maxi Gomez struck a second for Valencia later to see the game finish 5-1.This was Barcelona’s second victory in four games and it sees them move onto 7 points in four games with Lionel Messi yet to kick a ball this season.Valencia on the other hand remained on four points and have now lost two of their first four games, winning one and drawing the other.In the capital, Real Madrid ended their two-game drawing run with a scrappy 3-2 victory over Levante.Real looked to be cruising at halftime as they took a 3-0 lead into the break with Karim Benzema scoring a brace and Casemiro adding a third.However in the second half, Levante tried to mount a comeback with goals from Borja Mayoral and Melero but that was as close as the visitors came as Real held on to a second win of the season.Zinedin Zidane’s who are still unbeaten this season now have 8 points from a possible 12. For Levante, they remain on six points with two victories and as many defeats so far this season.The other capital side, Atletico suffered a first loss of the season this past on the same day as they lost 2-0 away to a spirited Real Sociedad side.After a goalless first half, Martin Odegaard and debutant Nacho Monreal scored two goals to hand the home side a second victory of the season. Sociedad now have 7 points from 4 games.Atletico remains on 9 points having won all of their first three games of the season prior to last weekend’s loss.The La Liga summit is currently occupied by Sevilla who beat Deportivo Alaves 1-0 away from home on Sunday afternoon.Joan Jordan scored the only goal of the day in the 37th minute and it now sees  Sevilla move onto 10 points after winning three and drawing one of their first four games.Elsewhere in the division, Villarreal defeated Leganes 3-0, Espanyol beat Eibar 2-1 while Granada were 2-0 winners at 9-man Celta Vigo.The remaining three La Liga match-day 4 games all ended in draws.In Italy, Juventus were held to a first draw of the season away to Fiorentina on Saturday afternoon.Juventus dropped their first points of the season on Saturday afternoon.It was a day to forget as Maurizio Sari’s side had all of Douglas Costa, Miralem Pjanic and Danilo go off injured in the game.Juventus now have 7 points from three games while Fiorentina registered their first point of the season after losing both of their opening games.On the same day, Inter Milan continued their 100% start to the season thanks to a 1-0 win over 10-man Udinese.Stefano Sensi scored the only goal of the game at the stroke of half time 9 minutes after Rodrigo de Paul had been shown a straight red card.Still on Saturday, Napoli bounced back from their 3-4 disappointing loss to Juventus with a dominant 2-0 victory at home to winless Sampdoria.Dries Mertens scored either side of halftime to ensure Carlo Ancelotti’s side register a second win of the season. For Sampdoria, they have now lost all three of their 2019/20 Serie A games and are still rooted at the bottom of the standings.On Sunday, both Roma and Milan won their respective fixtures while Lazio lost.Roma defeated Sassuolo 4-2 with Henrikh Mkhitaryan scoring on his debut while a Krzysztof Pitek second-half penalty was enough for Milan to see off Hellas Verona 1-0 away from home.
