But we’re hoping there will be other options.” They include opening a skilled nursing center – nonprofit or otherwise – independent from the hospital. Dorio said the committee is planning a Town Hall meeting June 8 at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center in Newhall. Dorio said he also plans to recruit the Santa Clarita City Council tonight, while Berens is slated to meet Newhall Memorial executives this week. VALENCIA – Under threatening skies, Betty Maithonis, 78, held her ground for “seniorhood” Monday as part of more than 50 seniors picketing outside Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital to protest moves to shutter its 27-bed Transitional Care Unit. From a wheelchair, Maithonis hoisted her cardboard sign while recounting two separate stays at the skilled nursing center – one to recover from a hip injury and the other for her ankle. “I don’t know what I would’ve done,” said Maithonis, who lives alone in a senior apartment. “Probably to a nursing home, where I wouldn’t get as good a treatment.” The TCU looks after mostly elderly patients discharged from the hospital but not quite ready to go home. But hospital officials, citing low government reimbursement and rising demand for other services, are mulling over converting the ward to acute care. last_img
