But Bryant has averaged 30.4 minutes per game, which exceeds other star players in their 20th NBA season. That includes former Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (22.9 minutes) and Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett (20.3 minutes).Scott has defended his approach for various reasons. He wanted Bryant to shed rustiness stemmed from playing a combined 41 games the previous two seasons amid overlapping injuries to his left knee and right shoulder. Scott also minimized Bryant’s workload in practice and shootarounds. Scott also defended allowing Bryant to play on Tuesday against New Orleans.“He said he felt good yesterday. You have to go by what players say,” Scott said. “When he says he felt good, I trust that and so does Gary. Once the game started, it was a different story.”Then, Bryant told Scott he couldn’t get his right Achilles loose. He also sat on the bench frequently nursing heat packs to treat his right shoulder. He skipped three consecutive games at Staples Center this month because of that injury. He missed a pair of back-to-back games in November because of back issues. And he missed two weeks of training camp because of a sore lower left leg.Hence, Scott said he plans to talk with Bryant, Vitti and Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak on how to handle Bryant’s workload. Scott hoped all parties could reach what he called a “happy medium.”“My biggest concern is I want that man to finish the season standing up on the court and getting the respect he deserves,” Scott said. “He might hate me at the end of the season. But if it can get him through the season, it’ll be all worth it.” The pain in Kobe Bryant’s right Achilles felt serious enough for him to leave the court in Tuesday’s win over New Orleans after logging only 16 minutes. The pain in Bryant’s right Achilles felt serious enough that Lakers coach Byron Scott reported head athletic Gary Vitti has suggested sitting Bryant for about one or two weeks. According to that timetable, Bryant would miss anywhere between four to seven games.“He would love to shut him down,” Scott said after Wednesday’s practice at the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo. “But that probably isn’t going to happen.”The reason for Scott’s level of pessimism appears obvious. Although the Lakers (9-31) have listed Bryant questionable to play in Thursday’s game against the Golden State Warriors (36-2) at the Oracle, Bryant will still travel with the team in hopes to play both on Thursday against Golden State and on Saturday against Utah. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Bryant has not spoken to reporters since Friday’s win against Oklahoma City when he first felt pain in his right Achilles. But he was at the Lakers’ practice facility on Thursday both to receive treatment and get a haircut. On Wednesday, Scott reported Bryant telling him he felt “much better” than when he left in the second quarter of Tuesday’s win over New Orleans and when he missed Sunday’s game against Utah.“That makes me feel better, but I’m still very cautious,” Scott said before referencing Bryant’s self-imposed pressure to play as many games in his final NBA season. “I know how he is. He wants to try to give the fans their respect as well. The biggest thing for me is we have to sit down and talk about minutes. Obviously he can’t play 30-32 minutes per game.”
Kigali, Rwanda | AFP | FIFA President Gianni Infantino is set to ignite new opposition Friday over his ambition to introduce two money-spinning pet projects — a revamped global club cup and a bold new international championship.Infantino’s Saudi-backed plans, which have already been harshly criticised, are on the agenda of Friday’s meeting of FIFA’s ruling council. It is unclear whether the council’s 37 members will vote on the projects, giving world football’s governing body authorisation to implement them. But opponents are already sharpening the knives, deploring the proposed introduction of new competitions in an overcrowded football calendar while also targetting Infantino himself, accused of seeking to win votes ahead of his re-election bid in June next year. The World Leagues Forum, which groups professional football leagues, has expressed its strong opposition to the proposed Club World Cup format and the Global Nations League in the past. This week the influential body addressed a letter to Infantino signed by English FA chief Richard Scudamore and his Bundesliga counterpart Christian Seifert among others demanding that no decision be taken in Kigali. It also lamented the lack of any consultation between FIFA and the leagues.Forum members apparently accuse Infantino of going behind their backs directly to a few top clubs to discuss the plans for the club competition while the European Clubs Association issued an appeal to FIFA several months ago, apparently unheeded, for talks.UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin has complained of FIFA’s “strange” behaviour while UEFA, speaking via the powerful Professional Football Strategic Council (PFSC), issued a statement expressing concern about the whole process. It said the PFSC “unanimously expressed serious reservations about the process surrounding the FIFA Club World Cup and Global Nations League proposals and in particular the hasty timing and lack of concrete information”. – walkout? –The 17-member PFSC is led by Ceferin and includes Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of Paris Saint-Germain, and Ed Woodward, vice-chairman of Manchester United, two clubs who attended a meeting at which Infantino presented his plans to Europe’s biggest clubs.Ill feeling has reached a point where UEFA delegates may even stage a walkout if their views go unheeded at Friday’s Council meeting, according to the New York Times this week.Infantino is pushing to revamp the Club World Cup, boosting it from seven clubs to 24 in a four-year format, 12 of them European. Currently, the competition which elicits little interest outside of Latin America is played every year. His other project is to launch a biennial league tournament for nations, the Global Nations League, a sort of mini-World Cup with eight national teams competing.Infantino says he has an offer of $25 billion over 12 years for the two competitions from a group of investors, which the Financial Times has identified as SoftBank from Japan, backed by Saudi Arabia among others. That money, he promises, will be redistributed to clubs and continental football federations.Football historian Paul Dietschy told AFP the new club competition was clearly an attempt to pull the rug from under UEFA’s highly lucrative Champions League.“The Champions League will survive,” he said, but FIFA “will snatch away some of its income.”Share on: WhatsApp

SALT LAKE CITY – A gunman entered a shopping mall and randomly opened fire on customers Monday night, killing five people and injuring many others before he was killed, police said. More than three hours later, police were searching stores for shocked shoppers and employees who were hunkered down awaiting a safe escort from the Trolley Square mall. “We have six fatalities and multiple victims at hospitals,” police Detective Robin Snyder said. “They were found throughout the mall. I don’t know male or female or ages. “The suspect has been killed,” she said. The two-story enclosed mall, just southeast of downtown, is a refurbished old trolley barn, with a series of winding hallways and about 80 stores. At least four people were hospitalized, three in critical condition and one in serious condition, hospital representatives said. Two of the critically injured were men ages 16 and 50, a spokesman said. Authorities offered few details but said the gunman entered the mall about 6:45 p.m. MST. Antique store owner Barrett Dodds, 29, said he saw a man in a trench coat exchanging gunfire with a police officer outside a card store. The gunman was backed into a children’s clothing store, he said. “I saw the cops go in the store. I saw the shooter go down,” said Dodds, who watched from the second floor. Barb McKeown, 60, of Washington, D.C., was in another antique shop when two women ran in and reported gunshots.

Morata, Alonso, Luiz and Rudiger were rested from the trip to Belarus, staying in London, while Kante was an unused substitute after receiving a late call-up due to Cesc Fabregas’ illness. Fabregas is a doubt for the Toffees game, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek may not feature after a back complaint which boss Sarri described as minor.Everton forward Richarlison is a doubt for their trip to Stamford Bridge. The Brazil international, who rolled his ankle early in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Brighton but played the full duration and scored twice, will be assessed ahead of the match. With on-loan defender Kurt Zouma ineligible against his parent club, there could be a first Toffees start for fellow summer signing Yerry Mina. Phil Jagielka and James McCarthy are available, while Jonjoe Kenny is another doubt.Chelsea are unbeaten in 23 home Premier League games against Everton (W13 D10) since losing 0-1 in November 1994. In all competitions, Everton have won none of their last 28 visits to Stamford Bridge against Chelsea (D11 L17). Everton have lost 11 of their last 13 away Premier League games played on Sunday (D2) since winning 2-1 at QPR in March 2015.Arsenal vs Wolverhampton WanderersEmirates Stadium, LondonSunday, 11-11-2018 @07:30 pmReferee: Scot AtwellUnbeaten in their last 15 games across all competitions, Arsenal will be out to maintain their surge up the table when they host Wolves on Sunday afternoon. After an impressive start to the league campaign, the visitors find themselves on a three game losing streak and Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping to get their season back on track but the task doesn’t get any bigger than a trip to the Emirates.Arsenal will be without Danny Welbeck and Stephan Lichtsteiner for Sunday’s Premier League visit of Wolves after both were forced off injured in Thursday’s draw with Sporting Lisbon. Welbeck (ankle) is expected to be sidelined for some time after being taken to hospital following an awkward fall, while Lichtsteiner limped out of the Europa League clash with a muscular issue. Mohamed Elneny (thigh) and Konstantinos Mavropanos (groin) are still missing, while Matteo Guendouzi is back in domestic contention after serving a one-match ban.Wolves’ only injury concern is Portuguese-Diogo Jota who is currently nursing an injury. Arsenal haven’t been behind for a single minute in eight Premier League matches against Wolves – only one team has ever played more games against an opponent without falling behind (Chelsea v Portsmouth, 14 games). It has been business as usual for Pep Guardiola’s side who are still unbeaten in the league and are on the back of a two six goal victories in the last seven days. For United, they must be in good mood going into the clash after winning all their last three games in all competitions by a 2-1 scoreline. The 25-year-old missed the trips to Bournemouth and Juventus with a hamstring complaint but will be assessed as the striker steps up training. Diogo Dalot has been out with an injury sustained during the international break, while Captain Antonio Valencia is back in contention having travelled to Turin.Manchester City have won just two of their last eight matches against Manchester United in all competitions (D2 L4) since winning four in a row between 2013 and 2014. Manchester United, who won 3-2 at the Etihad last season despite being 0-2 down, are looking to win back to back Premier League games at the stadium for just the second time, also doing so with wins in November 2008 and April 2010. Two of Man Utd’s three Premier League wins against Man City when they’ve trailed in the match have been away from home and from 0-2 behind – in November 1993 and April 2018. Premier League meetings between Manchester City and Manchester United have been won by the away side on 17 occasions – only Aston Villa vs Liverpool (19) and Everton vs Man Utd (18) have been won by the visiting team more. Manchester United have conceded 18 goals in their 11 Premier League games this season. It took them 25 games until January 31 to concede as many in the competition last season. Manchester City haven’t lost any of their last 53 Premier League games against sides starting the day outside the top four (W44 D9 L0), since a 0-4 loss at Everton in January 2017. Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is still yet to score against Manchester United in the Premier League, attempting 19 shots in 12 games without success; among players with at least 50 Premier League goals, only Robbie Keane (22) has played more times against the Red Devils without scoring than Sterling. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero scored seven goals in his first seven Premier League games against Man Utd, but has failed to score in his last three against them since. Anthony Martial has scored in each of his last four Premier League games for Man Utd – he could become the seventh different player to score in five or more in a row for the club in the competition (Ruud van Nistelrooy x4, Wayne Rooney x2, Eric Cantona, Dwight Yorke, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin van Persie). This will be the 22nd meeting between Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho in all competitions – the Spaniard has won nine and lost five (D7) of the previous 21. He’s only lost more matches against Jurgen Klopp (7) than Mourinho (5) during his managerial career. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has never lost consecutive home league games against a single opponent in his whole managerial career. Comments Tags: premier leaguetop
